Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
EMDR is a therapy primarily used treat trauma however its use has been expanded to a wider range of presentations such as anxiety, depression and chronic pain. EMDR involves briefly accessing distressing experiences while a therapist directs the individual's eye movements or uses other forms of bilateral stimulation to help process memories which have become stuck in their processing due to the brain being in “fight or flight”. EMDR therapy is different from other forms of therapy as it does not require the client talk in detail about the distressing experience nor does it involve homework between sessions. The process allows the brain to naturally heal. It can also often be a much quicker process.
